World Water Day

On 22 March is "World Water Day since" 1993, when the United Nations General Assembly declared it. Water is very precious, although sometimes we might forget it. We cannot survive without it. All living things need water to live, that's why we must conserve water at all costs.

You can see Chinese officials spray-painting grass in the city of Chengdu to look more lively, nice and green. City officials told the dye contains fertilizer to help plants to grow. Does it sounds too good to be true?

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day or Poppy Day is a special day observed in England to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars.

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the sign of the Armistice, to signal the end of World War One.

The Sunday nearest to 11 November is Remembrance Sunday. Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain. At 11 a.m. people across Britain hold a two minute silence to remember the millions who have died in war.

The week before 11 November, you'll see people in the streets and on TV wearing a poppy. They are red flowers made of card and they have been used since 1920 to commemorate soldiers who have died in war. Poppies are also used to raise money for people whose lifes have been changed by war.

Golden Gate Bridge 75th Aniversary

The Golden Gate Bridge is a famous suspension bridge in California, USA. It joins the city of San Francisco with the Marin Peninsula.

They started to build it on January, 1933 and finished on May the 27th 1937. It was built in a dangerous place. San Francisco is near a fault line, so there is always the danger of earthquakes.

To build a base for the tower, the bridge builders needed to work 30 metres below the ocean surface. They made a huge box that reached from the surface down to the ocean floor. Then they pumped the sea water out so that they could make the concrete base for the tower.o the bridge. They had to be made by machines that were right next to the bridge and then pulled across the two towers.

Today the "Spanish Mona Lisa" has arrived in Paris.

"La Gioconda" is one of the world's best-known faces. It's a half-length portrait of a woman. The famous Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci created it. This painting is in the collection of the Louvre Museum in Paris.

 

Her "twin sister" was in Madrid's Prado Museum, but today they moved her and you can see both of them at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Today is Mafalda's birthday. Joaquín Salvador Lavado (Quino) created her on March the 15th 1962.

 

World’s Smallest Frog

It's the world's smallest vertebrate.

Scientists found the new species, which on average is just 7.7 millimeters long, in the southwestern Pacific island.

This frog sits on a U.S. dime. It is the world's smallest creature with a spine. The frog was found near the village of Amau, in Papua New Guinea.

Pakistani fishermen catched the biggest whale shark of the world.
 

Fishermen killed and transported an 12-meter long whale shark, weighing in at 22 tons. Initially, the owner of the boat had hired two small cranes to lift the whale shark. The two cranes were unsuccessful in lifting the 22 ton animal out of the water, which prompted the boat’s owner to arrange for a single heavy-duty crane to get the job done.

Punxsutawney Phil

Groundhog Day 2012

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow when he came out of his tree stump on February the 2nd in Pennsylvania. According to the legend, if Phil sees his shadow, we should expect six more weeks of winter weather. If Phil does not see his shadow, spring is just around the corner.

"Thank you so much for the lovely children's Christmas cards. They came to school on Friday and the teachers and children were so excited!! The cards are so beautifully made.
