The first Olympic games took their name from the Greek city of Olympia. They were held every four year, started in 776 BC (2,788 years ago). At that time this festival took place to honor Greek gods. The most important was called Zeus.
The modern Olympic games opened in the first week of April 1896 in Athens, Greek. They have been cancelled twice due to First and Second World War.
Host cities are selected by the IOC (International Olympic Committee ) membership, usually seven years in advance.
